If your boiler breaks down and you need a replacement, you might be able to get help towards the cost with a boiler grant. In some cases, you may be able to get a free boiler.
There are many boiler grant schemes and eco-schemes that could help you pay back the cost of a boiler through savings made on your energy bills. In some cases, you won’t need to pay the money back.
Grants for new boilers – are you eligible?
There are many schemes that can cover the cost of a new boiler or help with money towards to cost of a new one. The schemes change their criteria over time so always make sure that you have the latest, up-to-date information on eligibility criteria.
Warm Front’ grants
‘Warm Front’ was replaced by a new Government scheme, ‘Affordable Warmth’ in 2013. This scheme offers grants towards a new boiler, cavity wall insulation and loft insulation to anyone who meets its eligibility criteria.
You may be required to make a contribution, but the Affordable Warmth grant will save you hundreds of pounds on your heating bills every year. You can find out if you are eligible by taking the 60 Second Eligibility Check.
Government grants for boilers ECO scheme
Another boiler replacement scheme is ECO, a Government scheme that was set up to help low-income households access free or heavily subsidised replacement boilers. By replacing an inefficient boiler with a modern, condenser boiler, you could save hundreds of pounds every year.
There are benefits-related criteria and your current boiler must be five years old or older, and not a condensing one. And that really is all it takes to qualify a new boiler grant under the ECO scheme.
Free boiler grant in Scotland and Wales
Some of the UK government grants for boilers apply in Wales and Scotland but there are also specific schemes run by the Scottish Government and the Welsh Government too.
Free boiler and insulation grants in Scotland
Boiler grants in Scotland are available too with the 2016 scheme being opened up to include a wider range of domestic energy efficient products. These products also include a free boiler replacement grant for those who are eligible.
To qualify you need to be a home owner, private tenant or landlord and your current gas boiler is not a condensing one. You will also need to be in receipt of state pension credit or Child Tax Credit, with a household income of less than £15,860. Boiler replacement scheme in Wales
The scheme in Wales is Nest Wales and like other boiler grant in the UK, it too focuses on people and families living in hard to heat properties.
This schemes focuses on the Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating in the first instance. Homes that have a rating at the lower end of the scale – E, F or G – could be eligible for free home improvements through the Nest Scheme.
Most properties with an E, F or G EPC rating with will have no central heating or central heating with a very inefficient boiler. The hot water cylinder may be uninsulated, and with no cavity or solid wall insulation. If your home is also lacking double glazed windows, and little or any loft insulation, you could benefit under this scheme.
